Highland Dancing at the 2008 Elizabeth Celtic Festival

This year (2008), Colorado is hosting the United States Inter Regional Championships...the National Championship in Highland Dancing. Unfortunately, it's not being held at the Elizabeth Celtic Festival, but at the Marriott-Denver Tech Center, 4900 South Syracuse Street, Denver, CO 80237. This is a big deal, certainly, for Colorado, and every person of experience (our entire dance competition staff) will be helping there to insure the event's success. Therefore, there won't be a Highland dance competition this year (2008), but it will resume next year (2009) and probably return to a two-day format (competitor numbers are on an up-swing). This year, there will be performances of Highland Dancers, in rotation with Irish Step-Dancers, Welsh Dancers and Scottish Country Dancers.

Below are some photos from the 2006 competition at Casey Jones Park. As you can see, we were on the beautiful grass of the baseball fields...but, boy was it hot! Last year, we moved the Festival largely to the pine forest 200 feet away...we lost the superb grass, but got some shade. Our judge in 2007 was Sheila Mittig of Novi, Michigan.

Below are the primary class (ages 6 and under) Highland Dancers receiving awards.

Dancing from Mrs. Kathleen Drummond,
our 2006 Highland Dance Judge.

Just two weeks after the 2007 Elizabeth Celtic Festival,
Heather Bruce went and competed in Scotland, accompaning the
Colorado Youth Pipe Band (which she is a member).

Highland Dance friends Hannah Gillette and Heather Bruce.

Hannah, now age 10, qualified for the U.S. Inter Regional Championships (National
Championships) held one week after the Elizabeth Celtic Festival, in Irvine, California.
She was First Runner-up in the Southwest U.S. Regional Championship in Kansas City back
in April.

At the U.S.I.R. in California, she competed well, though didn't place. Out of the nineteen
best dancers in the U.S. (for her age-group of 12 & under), she was somewhere in the middle...
a good result for a first time at that level of competition (everyone was very good).
