The 2010 Elizabeth Celtic Festival
Each contestant gets two attempts (throws), while standing on a barrel top (there were some DQs (disqualifications) in 2009 due to competitors falling off barrel-top after their throw). Entry Fee is $5 per competitor Prizes: 1st Place--a bottle of Bushmills Irish Whiskey 2nd Place--a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey 3rd Place--two shots of whiskey at the Breckenridge Saucy Wench Pub If the winner is too young to get the prize won, or declines the prize, a gift certificate will be substituted. Amateur Men will first compete in a Preliminary (Elimination) Competition at 1:00 p.m. on the baseball field after the Rugby Match on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Sign-up at the location and pay the $5 entry fee. Each participant will be given a voucher for a free beer at the Rogue Pub. The top eight competitors get to compete at the Finals, which will be held later the same day, starting at 6:30 p.m. (immediately after the Parade of the Clans at 6:00 p.m.) at the Braemar Glen (Scottish Athletics field). Amateur Men Finalists don't need to pay again to compete. The Event for Women and the Event for PRO Men will be after the Amateur Men's Finals 6:30 p.m. at the Braemar Glen (the Scottish Athletics field). Competitors for the Women's Competition and for the Pro Men's Competition will register at 6:30 p.m. (while the Finals for Amateur Men's Competition is underway). The present World Record for Haggis Hurling has been held by Alan Pettigrew for over 20 years.
He threw a 1lb 8 oz Haggis, an astonishing 180 feet, 10 inches on the island of Inchmurrin on Loch Lomond in August 1984.
While details are scarce, it may be likely that Pettigrew did not stand on a barrel-top to make the record toss.
